Captain John is a Continuation High School,Students can enroll at the beginning of the school year or at semester. CJHS serves credit deficient students in grades 10-12. 9th graders have the option under special circumstances. Our students enroll after being referred from Hoopa Valley High School and are usually students for whom the traditional educational setting has not worked. We are a Tier 2 intervention school. We strive to help students obtain the necessary credits to return to Hoopa High School at the beginning of the next semester. Our students attend 15 hrs per week and obtain instruction/class work from the Teacher(s). It is then up to the student to complete the work at home independently and submit it daily/weekly to the Teachers during class time. We typically do not offer Full-Time Independent Study. Why is the school called Captain John? The school is named after a Hupa Village Leader, Captain John Medilding. Captain John came from a leader of one of the Hupa Villages known as Medilding. Medilding translated into English means "The Boat Place" located in on the Hoopa Indian Reservation in Hostler/Matilton District. The school is across the river from this Native American Hoopa Village. The school is near Fort Gaston which came into existence in 1860. In 1932 a Boarding School was created and placed near Fort Gaston which is very near the school. 2023/2024 Graduation will be June 14th, 2024 at 6pm - Pritchard Field, Hoopa CA.For more information about graduation email tcooper@ktjusd.k12.ca.usQuick Links |
